What is Watari?

Watari, founded in 1986, supports diverse communities, initially focusing on high-risk youth in Vancouver. It has expanded its mission to offer programs and services to various individuals and groups in downtown Eastside and surrounding areas.

At the heart of Watari’s mission is the belief that diversity is integral to a caring community.

Watari has evolved to meet community needs, providing a safe and supportive environment despite challenges.

Our Leaders

Heather Scarff

Executive Director
Heather joined Watari in 2006, holding roles such as Intake Worker and Community Addictions Counsellor. Passionate about community support, she empathizes with challenges as a spiritual Indigenous woman. In her free time, she enjoys music, nature, and family.

Eloina Alberto

Food Pograms Director
Eloina Alberto, Director of Food Programs at Watari Counselling & Support Services, is a Latin American migrant woman passionate about supporting those in need. A nurse in her home country, she's concerned about food security in the DTES and values contributing with compassion and dignity.

Kevin Crofton

Youth Programs Director
Kevin Crofton, Watari's youth programs manager for 13 years, previously worked in the Burnaby school system for 10 years. He coordinated outreach programs for at-risk Indigenous youth and directed youth theatre productions in Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.

Grace King

Wellness Centre Director
Grace King is a dedicated community support professional focused on helping individuals find housing solutions and access key resources. She is committed to fostering healthy relationships within the community, promoting well-being and inclusion through comprehensive support and group discussions.
